New features
Mamiya have added a number of additional features to the 645AFD. One of the main changes is that the 645AFD is now able to compensate Metz flashguns between ± 3EV in 1/3 steps in combination with a SCA adapter (SCA 3952).

The second key change is that the Mamiya 645 AFD has been adapted to communicate with third party digital backs compatible with MSCE (Mamiya serial communication for external), through the rear electric contacts for a simpler connection and safer operation.

In addition to these two key differences, there are many other additional features.

Comments
"Of the many additional features of the new Mamiya 645 AFD, two features stand out. Following very close collaboration with third party digital back manufacturers, the Mamiya 645 AFD has been adapted to communicate with third party digital backs compatible with MSCE (Mamiya serial communication for external) through the rear electric contacts therefore making for a simpler and safer connection. The other main change is that the 645 AFD is now able to compensate Metz flashguns in 1/3 steps in combination with a SCA adapter. These new features will enable both professional and keen amateur photographers alike to embrace both traditional and digital photography"

Photography Monthly (april 2002) Review:
"The Mamiya has all of the features you'd expect of a decent 35mm, and the control dials let you change shutter speed and aperture without having to readjust your grip."
